R102 upgrade – Port Shepstone to Umzumbe – contingency plan announced

A follow-up meeting will be held with the KZN Department of Transport.

An informative stakeholder meeting was held last Wednesday to address concerns surrounding the R102 road project (P3-1).

Rehabilitation of the R102 – from Port Shepstone to Umzumbe – is about 16 weeks behind schedule.

The project team acknowledged the frustration and uncertainty caused, as well as limited communication to date, and took responsibility. The session aimed to provide an update on progress so far, outline challenges experienced, and discuss the proposed way forward, while giving stakeholders an opportunity to engage openly with the project team.

Caz Van Der Byl Meth, chairperson of the Bendigo Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association and president of the South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the project team had been open and greatly assisted those present.

“There is a contingency plan in place. A company, Aqua, will be partnering with the contractor on site within the next two weeks to carry out trial sections. Once those trial sections are approved, it will give them the go-ahead to get the road back on track again. This was the only promising news to date,” she said.

Meth promised to keep the community updated and confirmed that a follow-up meeting will be held with the KZN Department of Transport.

“We are awaiting their announcement, as agreed at the last stakeholder engagement that took place last Thursday,” she added.
