Ideas shared at gathering of macadamia nut farmers in Port Shepstone
Discussions centred on the production process and disease prevention.
Local macadamia nut farmers were invited to an information day at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre recently, where the Department of Agriculture provided details on production and disease prevention.
The department’s advisor Lungi Mkhungo said that the reason for the event was to share information because some farmers are a bit behind with production.
Among the attendees were small macadamia producers and consultants.
Mkhungo said the ideas shared will help the farmers in their production process.
“They were advised about the soil and type of environment macadamia trees thrive in. Also, how to use fertilizer and how to deal with insects and diseases.”
She further advised about seedlings. “If you buy seedling from nurseries it’s safe from diseases. It takes about eight years before a tree can produces nuts.”
Mkhungo encourages people to plant macadamias for a profit.
