OPINION: Shaken senior thanks rescuers

She expresses her appreciation to the people who assisted her.

On Sunday, February 22 at midday I stopped at the corner of Marine Drive and Wedge Drive in Ramsgate, while trying to find my way to a friend living in Wedge Drive.

I stopped just off the corner, under a tree next to an electricity distribution box.

Having found my bearings, I put my VW Polo 1400 into gear to go up the road when suddenly the left front wheel fell into a sinkhole.

There is no warning sign of this ditch. I could not get the wheel out by revving the engine and trying to pull forward.

I got out of the car and was trying to think who could help me.

A gentleman in a medium sized car stopped and came to help, but my car was too heavy to lift out of the ditch.

An SUV stopped and a kind couple came to assist. Then an even larger bakkie stopped and a gentleman came over as well.

It was decided to use a heavy duty jack to lift the wheel and then rev the engine to pull the car forward. This plan worked and my car duly jumped forward and out of the ditch.

All the time the woman in SUV stood beside me and kept me calm – I am a senior citizen – and even guided me up the road to where my friend’s property was.

I was so shaken I did not ask for the names of my rescuers.

By writing this letter I would like to, once again, most sincerely express my appreciation to the people who assisted me.

It is heartening to know there are still people who are prepared to assist those in need of help. God bless.

May there be someone to help you if you are ever in need, even if it’s only a kind word or two.
