Former Margate attorney breaks barriers in law and business

Sybil Sindisiwe Mnokwe hopes her story inspires others on similar paths.

Attorney Sybil Sindisiwe Mnokwe (32), formerly of Margate, has added another achievement to her long list of accolades – she received an Outstanding Growth in Legal Services and Entrepreneurship award at the Emerging Brands In Africa Awards in Sandton recently.

“Winning this award is a profound validation that great things truly come to those who work hard, remain humble, patient and trust God. It celebrates my multi-disciplinary success in law, education, construction, and the re-establishment of my hair business, which aims to bring premium-grade products to the South Coast. My ultimate passion lies in youth development. The big world is not always a kind place, but you can break the barriers. This accolade carries a significant weight. I now have a greater obligation to represent South African black female youth on a continental stage,” said Sybil.

As a senior attorney with over eight years of experience, Sybil’s journey from the quiet suburb to the high-stakes boardrooms of Sandton and now onto the international stage is a masterclass in excellence.

She was recently hand-picked as the Recovery Manager for the South African office of Recovery Advisers, a prestigious international firm based in Dubai. Managing their Sub-Saharan portfolio, she will work at the intersection of international trade and export finance.

The daughter of the late Robert Mnokwe, and Makhosazana Mnokwe, she was fuelled by her father’s belief that she could be anything.

Sybil is a testament to the power of academic discipline, parental sacrifice, and an iron-clad will. She admits to being a ‘quietly lazy student’ in her early years, the belief of her teachers at Margate Primary sparked her transformation.

By the time she reached Port Shepstone High, Sybil had evolved into a high achiever, matriculating with three distinctions. A pivotal moment came when her history teacher, Patrice Pousson, challenged her to match her unmatched writing style with rigorous study.

She rose to the occasion, scoring 86% in history, a result that paved her way to Wits University. Her journey through a Bachelor of Laws was fuelled by deep personal sacrifice. To fund her dreams, her father sold his car and his inherited family home in Durban. Compelled by their selflessness, Sybil balanced her gruelling studies with an entrepreneurial spirit, running a successful hair business.

Her breakthrough came in 2018 at a law firm, and at the age of 27, she served as a part-time UNISA law lecturer while studying for her board exams and working as a candidate attorney.

In November 2021, Sybil was admitted as an attorney of the High Court. Today, she heads a multi-million-rand ABSA portfolio.

In 2024 she co-founded Khwela Mnokwe projects, a firm specialising in construction, supply, and legal consultancy. From building houses in the rural Eastern Cape to managing high-stakes litigation, she continues to prove that dedication doesn’t just make life easier, it paves a road where none existed.

While her legal career reaches new heights, her business, Khwela Mnokwe Project, has achieved a national trajectory in just two years. The firm has secured a partnership to work closely with the National Treasury over the coming year.

“I hope my story provides the hope and strength needed for those on similar paths to persevere,” said Sybil.
