Petition launched: Residents demand accountability from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality
Supporters say signing the petition is about more than potholes or power cuts - it is about restoring accountability, protecting property values, ensuring public safety and safeguarding the future economic stability of the area.
Frustrated residents of Oslo Beach and the greater Port Shepstone area have launched a formal petition calling on Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to urgently publish and implement a binding service delivery recovery plan.
The petition, coordinated by Yusuf Moosa, chairperson of the Oslo Beach Ratepayers’ Association, cites what residents describe as ongoing infrastructure collapse, governance failures and a lack of accountability.
According to the petition, residents continue to endure deteriorating roads, blocked stormwater systems, malfunctioning or non-existent street lights, neglected public spaces, and prolonged power outages that result in food spoilage and economic losses for households and businesses.
The document also raises concerns about erratic waste management, illegal dumping, slow response times during electricity outages and what it describes as repeated “patch-up” temporary repairs that lead to further breakdowns.
“These issues not only inconvenience residents but pose safety risks and undermine the dignity of our neighbourhood,” the petition states.
Residents argue that the municipality is failing in its constitutional obligations to provide sustainable services, ensure transparency and remain accountable to the community.
It further records that prior attempts to engage municipal leadership – including requests for meetings with the executive mayor and senior officials – did not result in meaningful engagement or resolution.
