Izidro Duarte retrospective headlines ‘The Third Dimension’ at gallery in Glenmore Beach

This highly anticipated exhibition also brings together sculptors from around the province.

Sands Gallery in Glenmore Beach is proud to present The Third Dimension: Sculptors of KZN & Beyond, a landmark exhibition celebrating sculptural excellence, featuring a major retrospective of artist Izidro Duarte.

Opening on Wednesday, March 18 at 16:30 for 17:00, this highly anticipated exhibition brings together sculptors from around the province, with Duarte’s work forming the central focus of the showcase.

Born in Ortiga, Portugal, Duarte arrived in South Africa in 1953 and has since established himself as a respected painter and sculptor.

He studied at the Witwatersrand Technical College in Johannesburg from 1959-1961 under notable mentors including Professor Robert Bain, Phil Kolbe, Anna Vorster and George Boys.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Duarte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Portugal, England, the Netherlands, Botswana, Australia, Germany and Switzerland.

His artistic practice is deeply rooted in the African environment.

As Duarte states: “When it comes to painting and sculpting, I see myself preoccupied with trying to turn visual reality into what will ultimately become something memorable as an art work.”

The retrospective at Sands Gallery offers a rare opportunity to experience the evolution of Duarte’s sculptural language – from early figurative explorations to the powerful, textured forms that have come to define his distinctive style.

His works reflect a profound engagement with Africa as a continent in transition, capturing what he has described as its rapid movement toward global assimilation.

Among other contributors are Anda Dodo, Beth Rautenbach, Gerard de Jong, and more.

The exhibition is curated by Robin Broide. Dinner and drinks available through Sands Lounge & Bar.
