KwaZulu-Natal coastal residents are urged to remain vigilant after Avian Flu (HPAI H5N1) was reported in the province.
Authorities are appealing to members of the public to report any sightings of sick or dead seabirds along the coastline to help monitor and limit the spread of the virus.
The disease poses a potentially devastating threat to both wild and domestic bird populations.
According to the KZN Marine Stranding Network, it is critical that accurate records are kept of how many cases are observed and where they occur. Early reporting allows authorities to respond swiftly and put containment measures in place.
While the health risk to humans is considered low, the public is strongly advised not to have direct contact with affected birds.
Anyone who encounters a sick or dead seabird is urged to:
• Contact the KZN Marine Stranding Network immediately.
• Avoid handling the bird. If handling is unavoidable, gloves and a mask must be worn.
• Take basic health precautions and keep children and pets away from the area.
Sightings can be reported via WhatsApp on 083 9416243, or by calling 031 3288222 (office hours) or 031 3288060 (after hours).
