Questions raised over Ugu District Municipality’s excellence awards
The awards celebrate municipalities and development agencies that demonstrate excellence in governance, service delivery and economic development.
With water in short supply on the South Coast, the community has questioned Ugu District Municipality’s accolades at the KZN Cogta Municipal Excellence Awards at the Durban International Convention Centre recently.
Residents of Oshabeni location have been protesting from Monday this week, saying that they want the water that was promised to them at least four years ago. Other areas along the coast are in a similar predicament, some without water for weeks or months.
The community took to social media asking the municipality what is it that they are celebrating because they are supplying water at a minimal level.
The municipality received first place for the Most Functional District Development Agency in the province, with its development arm, the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), recognised for outstanding performance.
They also secured second place for 100% Municipal Infrastructure Grant expenditure, second place for the Best Disaster Management Centre and second in the province for the Best Implemented Service Delivery and Budgets Implementation Plan.
The awards celebrate municipalities and development agencies that demonstrate excellence in governance, service delivery and economic development.
SCTIE’s recognition underscores the agency’s continued efforts to position Ugu as a leading tourism and investment destination.
SCTIE CEO Vusumuzi Sibiya said the award reflects the collective commitment of stakeholders working to grow the district’s economy.
“This prestigious recognition affirms the important role that collaboration plays in unlocking economic opportunities for our region. SCTIE’s mandate is to drive tourism growth while facilitating investment into the district and this award demonstrates the impact of our work in aligning our programmes with municipal priorities and working closely with both the public and private sectors.”
He added that the agency will continue building on this momentum by strengthening marketing initiatives, supporting and driving catalytic infrastructure projects and creating platforms that attract investors to the region.
