South Coast Escape: Why Umtentweni Beach remains a firm favourite?

Umtentweni Beach: Where nature, art and community come together

Umtentweni Beach is a popular seaside spot and much loved by locals.

Tweni Tidy Towns plays an active role in keeping the area and beach clean and welcoming. Last year, a striking metal orca, built and erected by Peter Horlock, was introduced as a creative recycling initiative. Adding to the beach’s charm, a talented group of local women have mosaiced and painted the benches and tables, bringing colour and character to the area. Another group instrumental in improving the area is the Umtentweni Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association.

Whether you are planning a relaxed family day out or simply looking to cool off with a swim on a hot day, Tweni Beach is the perfect place to be.

Five must-knows about Umtentweni Beach

Blue Flag status

Umtentweni Beach proudly earned Blue Flag pilot status last year. This means it is in a developmental phase, working towards full Blue Flag certification by meeting most international standards for water quality, safety, management and environmental education over one or two seasons.

Full beach facilities

Visitors enjoy access to toilets, outdoor showers, benches, a grassed picnic patch, braai stands, plenty of bins and ample parking available.

Lifeguards on duty

Lifeguards are present during the holiday season and on weekends. A NSRI pink buoy is available on the beach for use in an emergency.

Swimmers’ favourite spot

The ‘Tweni Granny Pool’ is a safe, natural tidal pool at Tweni Main Beach, named for its calm, shallow waters. It is ideal for children and older swimmers, offering a protected spot away from the ocean’s waves and is often used by surf schools for lessons.
Perfect for relaxed coastal activities
A beautiful stretch of coastline ideal for snorkelling, surfing, fishing, yoga, picnics and leisurely seaside walks.
