Simple step-by-step guide to make an EcoBrick

Ecobricks are plastic bottles densely packed with clean, dry, non-recyclable plastic waste to create reusable building blocks.

With plastic pollution continuing to impact communities and the environment, EcoBricks are becoming a practical way for residents to reduce waste at home.

EcoBricks offer a simple, hands-on way for households to reduce plastic waste while contributing to cleaner, more sustainable communities.

Joan Gallagher sits on the EcoBrick bench at Tweni beach.

Here’s how you can make your own in 10 easy steps:
1 – Start with a clean, dry plastic bottle (2-litre works best).
2 – Use a stick, spoon, or similar tool to help compress materials inside the bottle.
3 – Remove labels from the bottle if possible – this makes recycling easier in the long run.
4 – Begin by placing soft plastics at the bottom and squash them down firmly.
5 – Add more plastic waste such as food wrappers, chip packets, and plastic bags. Compress as you go.
6 – Keep packing the bottle tightly. The contents should be solid with no air gaps.
7 – Use only clean and dry plastics. Items like cling wrap, sweet wrappers, bread bags, and small pieces of polystyrene are suitable.
8 – Avoid adding paper, food waste, or batteries – these cannot be recycled in eco bricks.
9 – Once full, the bottle should feel hard and sturdy enough to stand on without bending.
10 – Your eco brick is ready. It can be used in building projects or collected for recycling initiatives.
