Popular Port Shepstone fishing spot is derelict
Complaints have been lodged, but have fallen on deaf ears.
A renowned fishing spot, ‘The Block’ in Port Shepstone, is in need of some TLC. Sewage overflows are frequent, this along with a poor road conditions, broken safety rails, limited bins, lack of lighting and tables.
“It is so sad to see sewage flowing into this area. For years people have been complaining, but the problem is not fixed. What really saddens me is that people take the sea water to drink and to cleanse themselves. I am sure the municipality knows about this. This is a serious health risk,” said fisherman Jimmy Naicker.

“Why aren’t our local authorities, councillors and municipalities doing something to keep this place alive,” asked another local fisherman.
“Local authorities often fail to maintain prime areas like this. Is our municipality prioritising political interests over service delivery, which leads to neglected infrastructure and urban decay, ” added the angry angler.

Similar sentiments were shared by Venesen ‘Totes’ Nair.
“The only good that comes out of this area is from a single individual who keeps this area spotless of litter. For the past three years, he has been cleaning this area everyday. The municipality doesn’t acknowledge this man. So what are they doing?” he asked.
The municipality was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
