Progress at bulk water projects in Umkomaas
Once completed, the Water Treatment Works will supply an additional one hundred million litres of water per day to Ugu District and the eThekwini Metro respectively.
Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina conducted an oversight visit of the Lower uMkhomazi Dam for National Water Month in March.
The oversight comprised of the Ngwadini Dam and Goodenough Water Abstraction Works.
Majodina assessed progress on the construction of these bulk water projects and expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.
She also noted that the Ngwadini Dam project is at 56% completion while the Goodenough Water Abstraction Works was at 90% completion.
uMngeni-uThukela Water also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the project and meeting all set targets. The minister further visited the site of a Water Treatment Works, expected to be constructed in the next few months.
Once completed, the Water Treatment Works will supply an additional 100 mega litres (one hundred million litres) of water per day to the Ugu District and the eThekwini Metro respectively.
To ensure that projects such as these are carried out efficiently, the department noted that it is crucial to put a stop to any and all forms of corruption in the water sector. The Water Sector Anti-Corruption Forum was formed for this purpose and launched for National Water Month by Majodina and other role-players.
The forum is a strategic platform in partnership with the Special Investigating Unit to coordinate efforts to prevent, detect, investigate, and respond to corruption within the water sector.
