Turn achievement into opportunity, says Port Shepstone graduate

Lwethu Cele encourages youth coming from limited resources to pursue higher education.

Lwethu Cele, who hails from Port Shepstone, (LLB) was recently capped at the University of Johannesburg, receiving his LLB (law) degree.

While it was undoubtedly a moment of great pride and a reason to celebrate, it also came with quiet reflection.

For Lwethu, it represented the beginning of a deeper responsibility to give back to the communities that molded him.

“Graduation is more than a personal milestone for me. It’s a reminder that education has the power to transform lives, especially for young people who come from communities where there are limited resources,” he said.

He felt that those who have been fortunate enough to access higher education now carry a duty to uplift others and contribute ideas that can help their communities grow.

For many young people in the region, the dream of studying at university can seem distant.

“Financial hardship, lack of mentorship and limited exposure to professional careers often make higher education appear unattainable,” he said.

However, he has seen the difference the various fields, from law and accounting, to medicine and more can have in strengthening communities and changing individual lives.

His feeling is that education should translate into meaningful development at home.

And he was optimistic that the South Coast region possessed tremendous potential for professional and economic growth.

His hope was that the local municipalities would create environments which would attract this growth.

Lwethu feels inspired to give back to his community, by sharing, motivating and providing ideas as to how this could happen.

In particular, he encouraged youth coming from limited resources to pursue higher education, especially in law and related fields.
