The Rotary Club of Widenham has officially changed its name to Aliwal Shoal Rotary Club.
The club, which previously met at the Widenham Retirement Village Community Centre made a momentous decision to change its name, and the unveiling was held at the newly revamped Italian Club in Umkomaas on March 27.
The initiative came from club president Greg Cryer who had the inspiration to change the name to include the coastal towns that surround Aliwal Shoal, as an internationally recognised diving attraction.
Assistant Governor of Rotary (AG D9370) Ash Maharaj supported the decision and gave a short presentation of the benefits from a Rotary exposure perspective, with specific reference to the Friendship Exchange Programme.
Rotary has over 1.3 million members operating in over 200 countries, and the goal of the club is to reach out and embrace members from the larger surrounding communities of Umkomaas, Park Rynie, Scottburgh and Umzinto.
During the evening, three members were inducted into the club. Maureen Biyela is the newest member of the club; Prishen Sukraj is now head of Public Image and CCMA Commissioner and Vash Naidoo resumed her role as Club Secretary after a brief hiatus.
The Italian Club is now the new venue for the club to meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 17:00 to 18:00. This recent meeting was well attended by members and Friends of Rotary in an intimate setting.
