Chefs show off culinary skills at cook-off at Port Shepstone mall

Ten budding chefs went head-to head out of 65 entrants.

The Port Shepstone Mall cook-off on October 24 drew a crowd to see the best chefs in action.
Property administrator for the mall, Tanya Draai, said that after last year’s successful Heritage Day cook-off, demand grew for another cook-off.

According to Draai, this time round, contestants were told to cook any dish that could win them the cash prizes.
Of the 65 entries, the judges narrowed it down to the top 10, who competed.

“It was also a little bit different because we had juniors, from the ages of 12 to 17, to see what kind of culinary skills they have, and then we had masters, from ages 18 and older.”

One of the judges, Chef Mo Ngubane of the Black Moses Development, a hospitality training institution, said the initiative was great and that such events create opportunities for the hospitality industry.

Ngubane said it showcases the talent of people who have decided to sharpen their skills.

“We have seen contestants cook, then show their artistic side because to plate is no joke, but it’s an art.”
He said the judges looked for aroma, texture, taste, presentation and character. Health, safety and hygiene were also important.

Contestants had an hour to prepare their meals, but they all finished in 30 minutes, which Ngubane applauded.

Top three in the junior category are (from left) Amahle Myeni (2nd), Abongile Mbambo (1st) and Asemahle Zimdela (3rd).

In the junior category, Abongile Mbambo took first prize of R4 000, Amahle Myeni came second and won R2 000, and Asemahle Zindela won R1 000

In the masters category, Joel Gayapersad received R10 000 plus a Homechoice cook set, Zakhele Zakhele Matshoba won R5 000, and Siyanda Blose received R3 000.
