R61 near Munster closed after collision

A truck which attempted to avoid a head-on crash overturned, and is blocking both lanes of the road.

The R61 near Munster still remains closed after a collision earlier this morning.

Two men died, after the bakkie they were travelling in crashed into a cow which had wandered onto the road.

“In a bid to avoid a head-on collision, an oncoming truck attempted an emergency evasive manoeuvre. However, the momentum caused the truck to overturn, effectively sealing off the entire roadway with twisted metal and debris,” said KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service spokesperson Craig Botha.

According to officials at the scene, the truck transporting timber is still blocking the two lanes of the R61. There is still no timeframe as to when the road will be reopened. Rescue personal are still on scene recovering the truck.

Saps Ugu District Communication said a culpable homicide case has been opened and investigations are continuing. Traffic is being diverted via Leisure Bay.
