Port Edward pastor remembered for compassion and service

Pastor John Pretorius was involved with a community borehole project, the HELP Foundation and the MOTHS.

Beloved Pastor John Pretorius of Port Edward died on April 27, aged 69.

After recovering from a heart attack several years ago, he suffered another cardiac arrest recently and was admitted to hospital.

John was involved in the Port Edward Methodist Church since 1996, completing Local Preachers Studies in 1998.

He was then Youth Pastor and also studied and was ordained at Calvary University in 2006.

He became pastor of the church in 2004.

He was also involved with the community borehole project on the church grounds, the HELP Foundation and the MOTHS.

His ministry was one of compassion and love for all.

His wife, Marylyn, said he never turned away anyone who needed help, even officiating at funerals for people he didn’t know.

“He passionately loved his family. One email I received said we are changed by John’s love. We are better people for it, and he made the world a better place for those in the community. He showed us what life is when we walk in unconditional love. He always said he doesn’t believe in religion, but in a relationship with God and others. John’s life was a testimony to what he believed.”
