OPINION: Freedom has come at a cost

There is so much that needs taking care of and work ethics don't seem to exist anymore.

So much has changed in our lives and land since freedom for all was obtained, when the ‘one man, one vote’ ideology was brokered and we all got equal freedom at a cost.

The cost came in the guise of developing the country’s existing amenities and services, for the benefit of the freed populace.

Existing structures and physical services, that were functioning quite well, merely needed to be maintained and expanded to meet the bigger needs of the bigger population.

However, the cookie jar was just too inviting and self-discipline greatly lacking.

The result was now that the new politically advantaged, thanks to ‘cadrehood’, could take control and were no longer part of the ‘previously disadvantaged’ sector of society.

Now they could line their pockets without shame and they were all doing it.

Part of this new wave of false prosperity exists in small towns.

I have lived in two such towns, one in Free State and the other in Eastern Cape. Both places suffer with the same malaise. They could be twins.

Roads need maintenance and clearing of litter.

In both places the town workers may be seen sauntering along the street and, on hot days, relaxing in the shade of a leafy tree.

These fellows surely get paid at month end, but surely do not warrant getting paid for no work!

Work ethics do not exist anymore.

I, me, mine comes first. The idea of doing for and to the community no longer exists.
