UGU: Heavy police presence planned as June 30 shutdown looms
Acting District Commissioner Brigadier AH Kapp assures communities that any threats will be dealt with decisively.
Ugu Saps has undertaken extensive planning to effectively deal with any risks that may arise from the planned June 30 shutdown threat.
Police force levels have been increased across the district to maximise visibility and response capabilities in all policing areas.
Acting District Commissioner Brigadier AH Kapp said intelligence and confirmed information, as it is received, is being operationalised, with policing capabilities aligned to identified threats.
“Saps in conjunction with local law enforcement, RTI and Disaster Management have capacities in place. Private security has also committed support and capabilities in reinforcement of law enforcement capacity,” said Kapp.
He said station commanders have been engaging with community and traditional structures to strengthen communication channels and improve the flow of information on any impending risks that may require intervention.

Kapp said groups exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest will be policed to ensure the safety of both participants and communities.
“Groupings will be exercising their rights to peaceful protest, and these will be policed to ensure that participants and communities are safe during these actions. Public violence will be dealt with decisively,” he said.
Communities organising themselves through proactive measures are encouraged to act as the eyes and ears of law enforcement by sharing confirmed information and identified threats with their local Saps station commander for operational action.
“Threats will be negated through the joint efforts of all who want to make the South Coast and Ugu District safe and secure – as a collective we far outnumber those who act with criminal intent,” said Kapp.
