Overgrown verges in Oscar Borchers road in Marburg are a death trap
Structural and vegetation issues on Oscar Borchers Road fall under the jurisdiction of the KZN Department of Transport.
For months, if not years, the overgrown verges on Oscar Borchers Road in Marburg, from Sugar Mill Road (Lower Albersville), has been a safety hazard, forcing pedestrians into oncoming traffic.
Only some sections have been cleared. “Why has the entire road not been cleared?,” asked resident, Clyde Stoffels.
“Oscar Borchers is a death trap. Besides the danger of the overgrown verges, there are concerns that the road is caving in near 3rd Avenue. This section of road has been highlighted many times and the Department of Transport (DoT) is not taking our calls seriously. The other issue is the litter on this entire roadway. It is sad to see so many areas being neglected by government departments. Pedestrians including learners have nowhere to walk, but on the road, thereby risking their lives. As residents we deserve dignity, not neglect,” said Stoffels.

He added that these structural and vegetation issues fall under the jurisdiction of DoT.
“For many years, I have reported to DoT to attend to Oscar Borchers Road to cut overgrown verges, attend to the caving of the road and repair guardrails, but nothing has been done. At some points, the verges are about three metres in height obstructing the view of motorists.”
