Local heroes to go behind bars for a good cause in Shelly Beach

A well-known local personality will be taken into custody, but their identity remains a closely guarded secret as they have no idea what's coming.

Some of the South Coast’s best-known community champions will find themselves behind bars this July 18, but it’s all in the name of charity.

The Shelly Beach Lions Club will host its annual Jail and Bail fundraiser at Shelly Centre from 10:00 to 13:00, where local personalities and community leaders will appear on tongue-in-cheek charges before appealing to friends, family and supporters to raise their bail.

Among those already ‘behind bars’ are:
* Pat Symcox, was arrested for being the South Coast and country’s ultimate ‘house hijacker’ after helping countless families find their dream homes, but made a daring jail break on Tuesday this week. But, in a strange twist, couple Ciska and Ben van der Merwe have been arrested for aiding Pat’s escape.

* Scott Kvalsvig, affectionately known as ‘Banana Man’, has been arrested for going bananas while using his truck and boundless community spirit to help keep the South Coast’s Tidy Towns clean.

* Reshica Naicker, accused of stealing the hearts of Mrs South Africa with her winning smile and dazzling charm. Organisers joke that her mug shot was so good it nearly landed on the cover of Vogue.

* Scot Scott, charged with being a ‘Skattejagter’ after allegedly racing his tractor through the sugarcane fields of Ugu at 160km/h. According to organisers, ‘agter elke man’ were several cane rats and rock pythons that witnessed his daring stunts.

Every rand raised on the day will go towards supporting local charities and community-based projects across the South Coast.

Before the jail doors officially open, the Shelly Beach Lions Club will host a food and pet food collection from 08:00 to 10:00.

Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items and pet food, which will be distributed to local families and animal welfare organisations.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the light-hearted atmosphere, watch the mock arrests unfold and help free their favourite local hero with a donation.

Organisers have also hinted at a surprise ‘arrest’ on Saturday morning. A well-known local personality will be taken into custody, but their identity remains a closely guarded secret as they have no idea what’s coming.

Those unable to attend can still support the fundraiser by making an EFT donation to the Shelly Beach Lions Club, using the reference Jail and Bail followed by the name of the person they wish to bail out. Contact Johann on 082-549-9451.
