Arthur and June Cary, who have been living on the South Coast since the early 1990s, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 16.
They met in Welkom in the then Orange Free State, where they enjoyed playing hockey and badminton in the early 1960s.
Arthur worked for Anglo American, from whom he was to receive a long service award years later.
He was, and still is, a passionate motor-racing enthusiast, being recognised with honorary membership of the South African Sports Car Club in 1970.
A founding member of Welkom Harriers Running Club, he and June completed an impressive number of races around the country, including numerous Comrades Marathons.
June, a young teacher from Grahamstown, taught at Welkom High and the Convent of Saint Agnes for many years, besides being an active member of Welkom Club, playing tennis and squash league.
As squash champion at Welkom Club she was awarded honorary membership.
June served many a term as chairlady of the local Catholic Women’s League at St Dominic’s Church, as well as on the school PTAs, when their three children attended school in Welkom.
Arthur and June enjoyed the friendship and respect of their many acquaintances in the Goldfields community.
They have enjoyed living on the South Coast and are active members of Our Lady of Fatima Sea Park Catholic Church, having started the much-loved family group.
As well as being knowledgeable birders, their interests include nature conservation, Neighbourhood Watch, fishing, knitting, garden club meetings, keeping fit, and Arthur’s commitment to South Coast Fly Anglers, composing and sending articles on fishing to various fishing magazines.
The bride and groom of 60 years are deeply treasured and admired by the families of their three children and four grandchildren.
