Residents of Mahwaqa in Umdoni Local Municipality could not hold back their excitement on July 16 after they received boreholes that will provide water to a large section of the community.

A candidate of the MK Party, Baphezile Ngidi, who is from the area, donated two boreholes with a purification system.

According to Ngidi, there is a dire need for water in Mahwaqa.

She added several attempts were made over a number of years to get water into the area, but not a single community stand pipe was installed.

“These boreholes will supply at least three areas where mostly elderly people live and who have been hauling water from a stream.”

Ngidi added each tank produces 7500 litres per hour, which can benefit other communities.
Induna Muzikayise Gumede said he cannot explain his happiness because not having water has been the biggest challenge in the area.

“We are here today with so much excitement, but there are other areas which are still suffering and in need of water. This will go down in history that the first water stand pipe was given to us by Baphezile. She has helped us with this project and we cannot thank her enough.”

Gumede said she is a helpful community member and believes that she will do more for them.

An elder of the community, Bafikile Hlongwa, said that two streams in the area were a water source for residents. “My grandchildren will no longer have to fetch water from the stream, now that we have the boreholes”.
