Frustrated by years of illegal dumping, a local businessman and his crew came to the rescue and cleaned up a cul-de-sac on Roslyn Avenue in Umbango recently.

“I was approached by residents and as I live close-by I volunteered to have this spot cleared of the filth and rubbish for free. We did this as a community project to benefit our environment and it was my duty to give back to the community,” said Denver Pillay.

He also called on everyone to stop dumping unwanted waste on streets and vacant plots.

According to Ward 17 councillor, Ajith Rajaram, illegal dumping is a problem in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, with many hotspots frequently popping up.

“Roslyn Avenue has been forgotten for many years and unlawful dumping continued, creating public health and environmental hazards. It became an eyesore and danger to the people living nearby. This area also attracted other activities and created a nuisance that led to criminal activity and disruption to residents’ reasonable rights. Tired of the neglect and the accumulation of rubbish Denver was approached by residents and he wasted no time in cleaning the area,” said Rajaram.

Report illegal dumping to 039-682-5555, including vehicle registration numbers, photographs, or any relevant information that may assist in identifying offenders. The identity of whistle-blowers will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
