Paint a butterfly for hospice at Art-in-the-Park in Uvongo
Visitors will have the opportunity to paint their own butterfly on a pebble – free of charge.
Creativity and support for a worthy cause will come together at Art-in-the-Park in Uvongo on August 1, from 09:00 to 13:00.
Inspired by KZN Rocks and the Wings of Care Initiative of South Coast Hospice, this month’s event will focus on painting butterflies – a symbol of life, love and hope.
The theme reflects the compassionate care that hospice provides to cancer patients and their families by bringing comfort, dignity and peace during life’s most challenging times.
The completed artworks will form part of the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day celebrations at Southcoast Mall on October 10.
Besides enjoying the now familiar atmosphere of Art-in-the-Park and meeting more than 50 local artists while browsing their original artworks, visitors will have the opportunity to paint their own butterfly on a pebble – completely free of charge.
Johann du Toit, convenor of Art-in-the-Park, said that everyone is invited to take part, regardless of age or artistic experience.
“Whether you are an accomplished artist, an enthusiastic crafter or someone who has never picked up a paintbrush before, this project is for you. Our artists will provide all the materials, inspiration and guidance needed to create your own unique butterfly.”
Each painted pebble will be signed on the back by its creator before being donated to Southcoast Hospice for display on October 10.
The highlight of the morning will once again be the giant community canvas under the guidance of artist Anita Dumas.
Visitors will be invited to paint butterflies of any size and design on the canvas, recreating the excitement and overwhelming success of the community art project she led at the July Art-in-the-Park event.
Once completed, the community canvas will be signed on the reverse by everyone before being donated to hospice to be auctioned as part of its fundraising activities during the October celebrations.
Art-in-the-Park takes place in the park along Marine Drive between the Uvongo River Bridge and the central Uvongo traffic lights.
Admission, participation and all art materials are free, and everyone is welcome.
Should inclement weather result in the event not getting off the ground, it will be moved forward one week to August 8.
