Work stoppage shuts down Umdoni

The municipality is yet to comment on the situation.

Umdoni Municipality’s municipal services have stopped as protests and work stoppages continue for the second week.

This comes after the dismissal of acting municipal manager DD Naidoo on August 5, who has since been replaced by Prinze Zulu (also in an acting capacity).

The situation escalated last week when workers marched on Scott Street, overturned rubbish bins and scattered garbage across the road in protest. The same was done in the Umzinto CBD.

Rubbish dumped on Scott Street during last week’s protest.

In Scottburgh, the street was later cleaned up by a group of Scottburgh locals. According to many business owners, piles of rubbish dumped on the street were affecting their businesses and giving the town a bad name.

The municipality is yet to comment on the situation.

On August 12, Umdoni Municipality issued a public notice via Facebook about the temporary interruption of municipal services.

The municipality requests residents and business owners not to place refuse bags outside their premises during this period until services resume.

It is believed that Umdoni is currently working to resolve the situation and reinstate services.

Several refuse bags were torn open and left on the road.
