Hector Ncgobo, a lifeguard at Pennington Beach, was over the moon after a resident presented him with a cellphone recently.

He has been without a phone for several months after his phone suddenly stopped working.

Every day, Hector or one of the other lifeguards sends a photo of the beach and the beach info board with its swimming conditions and other useful information to Viv Sandwith of Tidy Towns Pennington to share.

Viv also mentioned that Tidy Towns members must be in contact with the lifeguards.

Thanks to another Tidy Towns member, Martin Hanlon, this was once again made possible. Martin donated the phone to Hector, who said he was so grateful to be back in communication with those who count.

Hector is well-known in the Pennington community. Just a week ago, he attempted to save the life of the elderly man who died after he was washed off the rocks at Umdoni Point.

Tidy Towns thanks Martin for his donation, and Hector and the lifeguards for all they do.
