Chinese delegates visit GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh
The visit forms part of ongoing international engagement with South African health institutions.
A Chinese delegation recently visited Scottburgh’s GJ Crookes Hospital to observe and learn from South Africa’s healthcare delivery system.
The delegation was welcomed by the hospital and provided with a comprehensive overview of the district hospital’s operations. The visit forms part of ongoing international engagement with South African health institutions, with countries frequently sending representatives to learn from the country’s healthcare model.
Management explained to them that South Africa’s healthcare system continues to attract international interest, with countries seeking to understand its approach to service delivery.
The visit focused particularly on the hospital’s eye clinic. Despite operating with just one optometrist, one medical officer, and one ophthalmic nurse, the dedicated team serves 30-40 patients daily and conducts weekly outreach programmes in remote and underserved communities.
The delegation showed interest in the clinic’s spectacles programme, which provides bifocal and single vision spectacles through a partnership with a private manufacturer. Pensioners receive spectacles free of charge, while employed patients pay a subsidised fee with government contribution. The turnaround time for spectacles is approximately one month.
The outreach programmes ensure continuity of care for patients who would otherwise struggle to access services.
In a significant development, the eye clinic conducts cataract camps where 60-100 surgeries are performed in a single week, despite not having a full-time ophthalmologist on staff.
The Chinese delegates actively participated in discussions, asking detailed questions about service delivery and patient care approaches.
GJ Crookes Hospital described the visit as a fruitful platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration between nations.
