Lower South Coast SPCA outreach helps 83 pets in Fairview
The organisation is appealing for support to continue its work helping animals in need.
Eighty-two dogs and a cat received assistance at a Lower South Coast (LSC) SPCA outreach drive in the Fairview community near Umzumbe last Saturday.
The LSC SPCA team administered rabies vaccinations to all the pets, treated them for ticks and fleas, minor wounds, and administered dewormers.
A list was drawn up of pets whose owners wanted them sterilised, with the SPCA planning to collect the animals and have them sterilised at the SPCA clinic soon.
Preventing unwanted litters of puppies and kittens is a major part of animal welfare work, helping to reduce the number of abandoned and dumped animals while allowing owners to better care for their pets. Rabies vaccinations are vital in preventing this deadly yet preventable disease, which kills animals and humans.
The SPCA team began its work at Sqalimfundo Crèche, where dogs, puppies and even a cat, carefully carried in a shopping bag, were treated.
Three tiny puppies, too young to walk from their home, were brought in by two small children pushing a wheelbarrow. Another pet owner proudly brought his dog, Sabelo, in a shopping trolley because he did not have a collar or lead to get him there safely.
After two hours, the team moved inland to the Fairview Mission Hall. Huge puddles from the previous day’s rain did not deter owners from lining up along the side of the road with their pets.
The SPCA team was led by Inspector Jacob Maduna, along with Maureen Mzobe, Bunye Maqanda, Gail Roets, Derick Shange and veterinarian Taylor Fernandez.
Packets of dog food, treats and other items, including toys, blankets and pet shampoo, were given to delighted pet owners.
The LSC SPCA is appealing for support to continue its work helping animals in need.
Items urgently needed are dog and cat food, slip leads, blankets, treats and toys. Monetary donations to cover operational costs will be appreciated.
