Residents urged to keep their distance from seal spotted on KZN South Coast

The message is clear: admire the visiting seal from a distance as 'wild means wild'.

Residents have been urged to keep their distance from a seal spotted along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast amid concerns about the potential risk of rabies.

The seal was last seen in the Shelly Beach area yesterday (Tuesday).

A safety notice has warned residents not to approach, touch, handle or attempt to feed the animal, which is currently visiting the coastline.

Seals are wild animals and can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous. The notice also highlights rabies concerns in the area, warning that there is a risk the animal could be infected.

Residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Do not approach or attempt to handle the seal.
  • Keep children and pets well away from the animal.
  • Do not attempt to chase the seal back into the water.
  • Observe it from a safe distance.

The public is also reminded that the seal should be left undisturbed, allowing the relevant professionals to assess the situation.

Anyone who spots the seal is asked to report the sighting to:

NSRI: 082 990 5950

Carla: 082 677 6792

Residents are encouraged to give the animal space and avoid any direct contact.
