Actress and theatre-maker, Kathleen Stephens, a former Port Shepstone High School learner, is off to the world premiere of ‘Death of a Whistleblower’ at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
She plays the part of Astha Patel alongside lead actress, Noxolo Dlamini.
The film, directed by Ian Gabriel (Four Corners) offers a kinetic and provocative plunge into the struggle over state capture and the sheer power of principled speech.
Its release, set for September 9, is part of the Centrepiece programme representing 45 countries.
Kathleen who has a B.A. Hons in Theatre and Performance from UCT, can also be seen in the recently released Netflix live action anime, One Piece where she plays the part of Makino.

Of Death of a Whistleblower, Suman Das of IndiaBlooms said, “The ensemble cast lends authenticity to their roles, with standout performances from Kathleen Stephens as Astha Patel and Inez Robertson as Emma Louw. These fierce female characters embody the spirit of South African feminist heroes, reflecting the powerful mantra ‘Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo – symbolising the strength of women.”
