Tonia Dwayisa (18) of Khathi High in KwaQwabe in Umzumbe Municipality achieved fourth place in the 2024 NSC exams in the Ugu District.
Originally from Gcilima, she will now study for a law degree at UKZN.
She received seven A symbols in Mathematics Literacy, Accounting, Business Studies, Tourism, Life Orientation, IsiZulu and English.
Tonia said her mother died when she was eight years old, and she grew up in a dysfunctional family. At one point, she ended up staying alone at home.
“I was taken advantage of by people who knew I was alone. My granny was working, and she would send food and my school uniform when she could.”
At that time, she said her teachers noticed something was wrong and referred her to social workers, and she was taken to Sacred Heart Child And Youth Care Centre in Mtwalume.
She said when she moved to the centre, she did not like it.
“I got used to it, and everyone was welcoming and loving.”
Tonia said that her high school teacher, Baxolile Cele, has played a big role in her life, as well as Nokulunga Mbhele at the centre.
“My teacher believed in me and motivated me even outside of school.”
The cheerful Tonia said the centre has done a lot for her, and she will forever be grateful and make them proud.
