To play on Astro turf

Members of the community who have the means can make our dreams become a reality.

DEAR Editor,-

I am a pupil at a local high school and have an intense passion for hockey. This year I had the opportunity, along with two of my fellow Ugu District residents, to play hockey for the U14 girls’ KZN hockey team. The majority of the girls in the team were from in and around Durban, where they have access to playing on Astro turf every other day, thus they had an advantage.

However, the fact that three Ugu players made the provincial team is testament to the talented hockey players we have on the South Coast. More players could have the same opportunity if they had access to an Astro turf hockey field. The talent that could be honed and unearthed could be talent that could grow hockey, not only on the South Coast, but also at provincial and national level. We could have future Olympic gold medalists in our midst.

Therefore I would like to appeal to members of the community who have the means, to stand up and help us grow our talent, to help make our dreams become a reality by assisting with funding for an Astro turf hockey field in the Ugu district.
