One of my favourite dishes is fresh fish with a lovely salad, but the price of fresh fish has rocketed on the South Coast recently, and with the increase in the number of businesses selling fresh fish, we now realise why – the high profit margin.
I visited a fish shop in Pietermaritzburg recently. Fresh rock cod is R69kg, salmon/reds R49kg, cut, cleaned, sliced and packed. I was amazed to see fresh fish at this shop at such low prices and the shop is in no way near the ocean, so I thought to myself that the fish may be a few days old at that price?
When I questioned the owner, he told me that he gets fresh fish almost every day after lunch and by the evening it is sold out. So my question is, how come we pay so much for fish on the South Coast?
I visited a fish shop in Marburg recently and the fish was R125kg. Unbelievable and more expensive than meat prices! Sorry, but I won’t be a visitor at your fish shop again anytime soon.
With the news of a new fish shop opening in Port Shepstone, I would like to welcome them and request that they keep prices reasonable for continuous loyal support.
