Celebrations had to be cancelled

During these hot and humid days, a bath or shower was not possible.

DEAR Editor,

Day four of no water! Early on Monday, December 23, I telephoned the Ugu water contact number to inform them of our predicament and was given a reference number. Later that day, as well as Tuesday, I phoned repeatedly, but was soon disconnected. On the morning of the 24th, I drove to Ugu in Oslo Beach, but found the offices empty. ‘Emergency’ phone numbers were not answered, simply disconnected after a while. Since then we have had to spend lots of money on bottled water – to date, more than my monthly Ugu bill.

During these hot and humid days, a bath or shower was not possible, nor could the toilets be flushed. The Christmas dinner still sits in the freezer and the celebrations were cancelled as we could not possibly have had guests under these circumstances. A great annoyance is that the whole world mourns the demise of Mandela, but we have to live with the consequences of this ongoing ‘heart of darkness’.
