DEAR Editor,-
We first became aware of the plight of the poor people of the small village of Woza near Nzimakwe, in the hills above the highway, after it was reported to us that heavy rains had completely destroyed their causeway, the only access to their places of work when it rains.
The urgency of the problem was first reported to our councillor last April and on many dates thereafter. Although he assured us the matter was reported to the ‘appropriate authority’ at HCM, nothing has been done to provide an ‘appropriate’ solution.
We do know the authorities visited the site. They filled the deep dongas with soil that disappeared after the next rains! It begs the question – does anyone at HCM really care? It seems the ANC-led council talks the talk, but clearly doesn’t always walk the walk.
To reach taxis to arrive at meagre work opportunities, these very poor people need to trek for over seven kilometres, if they can make it over the precarious river crossing. Our well-heeled councillors have no such problems. If they did, be sure the problem would have been solved months ago.
If our councillor can get no support, then who can? Here is a chance for the HCM to show these people they can, and will, help them. These underprivileged citizens rightly believe they are being ignored. Madam Mayor, there are a bundle of voters in Woza waiting to see if you and your ‘appropriate staff’ take action to show these poor souls that you do really care.
