‘Cable theft is at crisis level’

The situation has the potential to bring our province to its knees.

DEAR Editor,-

The Democratic Alliance will request that KZN SAPS commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, urgently appear before the province’s community safety portfolio committee in order to outline the measures being taken to prevent ongoing cable theft.

This crime has reached crisis level in KwaZulu-Natal and, without drastic action, it will kill investment in the province.

More importantly, it is impacting on service delivery with water and electricity outages becoming increasingly common due to vandalism.

In order to establish the true extent of the problem, the DA will also submit parliamentary questions to KZN Community Safety MEC, Willies Mchunu. Among the questions we will ask are the total value of cable confiscated by KZN SAPS since the beginning of 2014 and the measures taken against offenders that have been caught.

Cable theft has the potential to bring our province to its knees in terms of both the economy and service delivery. It must be dealt with as a matter of extreme urgency. This responsibility lies with the KZN SAPS and its commissioner.
