DEAR Editor,-
An increase in the number of ‘pirate’ metered taxis in KwaZulu-Natal is the direct result of a lack of law enforcement and attention to compliance by KZN’s Transport Department.
Left unattended, this problem has the potential to spark violence between licensed and illegal operators. Of particular concern is the welfare of commuters who appear to be at risk – there have been reports of muggings by drivers.
Illegally operated metered taxis will impact negatively on the business viability of the local metered taxi industry and this in turn will lead to job losses and unpaid tax revenue by illegal operators.
KZN Transport MEC, Willies Mchunu, must intervene and gain control of the situation by implementing measures which deal with this escalating problem.
