‘Forced to buy costly bottled water’

When is this problem going to be fixed? And will Ugu cover these costs?

THE water at my house in Ibis Road, Umtentweni, intermittently runs brown, especially in the mornings. I have reported the issue to Ugu time and again, but alas – no solution.

Although it affects the water when showering, it is not possible to see the brown water from the cold supply when mixed with hot water. We have to fill the bath with hot water and then allow it to cool to a suitable temperature to bathe.

Due to impurities in the municipal supply, it is unsafe to drink and we are forced to buy costly bottled water. Appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, etc also suffer and all this puts a strain on the power grid when Eskom is forever asking consumers to reduce usage.

People are now forced to install costly filtration systems or suffer the indignity of bathing, cooking and washing clothes in this filthy water. The hot water from the geyser is clear only temporarily when the sediment or impurities have settled at the bottom.

Once you use hot water and a new supply of cold water is fed into the geyser, this new water also has to first settle in order to obtain clean water.

Geysers will have a layer of sediment at the bottom that continuously increases and will contribute to corrosion and leaks, which will resulting in buying a new geyser, as well as possible damage claims via insurance.

When is this problem going to be fixed? And will Ugu cover these costs?
