DEAR Editor,-
As parents we might think that schoolteachers have the prime responsibility of moulding and disciplining pupils, even though that prime responsibility lies with parents. When parents, as family heads, train children correctly, it will help these children become responsible, more obedient, as well as be able to take education more seriously. It’s true that a small percentage of children can become unruly for various reasons, such as peer pressure, etc.
This can apply in a school environment, therefore the ‘headship’ is very important. I, on behalf of the governing body and parents, would like to commend Port Shepstone Secondary’s principal Shireen Ramkelawon for the following reasons:
As a parent, I have observed a number of positive things. For example, as a principal and with the assistance of other dedicated teachers, she was able to take the lead by setting an excellent example at that school. When she arranged meetings with parents and teachers, she was able to give constructive counsel through her words and actions.
Some might feel that she was too strict at times, but one will only realise after her departure that she was the pillar of the school. She was a good disciplinarian for pupils when it came to good morals, dress and grooming, and good education was especially a priority to Shireen.
As parents we have ample evidence of the seeds she has sown and the fruits they will continue to bear, year after year. This school has shown the best results, for example, in our local newspaper, the mayor presented accolades to many, including Shireen, who accepted the award for ‘Best Urban High School’.
On behalf of the parents, I am positive that the staff will follow her example because this school has the potential to still yield the best results with the new principal in future. The parents, governing body, teachers, pupils and the community wish the principal Shireen Ramkelowan all the best for the future.
