DEAR Editor,-
I have read the article in last week’s Herald, and my heart goes out to Merlewood Primary that has been in existence for so many years, has dedicated teachers and staff members, but receives no recognition by our government.
Speaking to staff members, I was informed that 90 percent of the 1 050 children educated at Merlewood Primary consists of our ‘so-called’ black South African children.
Many incidents revolving around Merlewood/Marburg have reached headlines in our local newspapers, including the stabbing of a 17 year old grade 12 pupil. The Marburg/Merlewood ANC deputy chairman and secretary have reacted to the homeowners’ call for stricter measures in the area. Locals in the community have assisted in the arrest of the suspect of the vandalism at Merlewood Primary. When will the government react – without being forced to?
Can our Department of Education not see the need for assistance in existing schools, which have minimum resources (as stated by the principal)? Can our government not see the threat to health and safety of pupils and teachers? Millions of rands are distributed for the building of new schools, but why can’t something be done for existing schools?
Where have our government’s priorities gone? Maybe reaction will take place only when lives are lost!
EXTREMELY CONCERNED
