‘Reckless drivers endanger innocent people daily’

I was almost killed by a young policeman driving recklessly at a major intersection in Margate.

DEAR Editor,-

It is with horror that I read about the eight correctional services’ people who were killed on the N2 in the Cape, and I direct these questions to this country’s authorities.

1 Why are police vehicles, ambulances, blue light vehicles (transporting VIPs), minibus taxis, and in general, all government vehicles allowed to break just about any traffic regulation by speeding, not stopping (or even slowing down) at traffic lights, stopping in the middle of the road in front of moving traffic and parking in non-designated places?

2 Is it acceptable to the authorities that these drivers continue like this, literally killing thousands of people every year?

3 Are the authorities unwilling to take action against this because the majority of them are guilty of transgression of the same traffic rules?

I think I am justified in asking these questions because during April I was almost killed by a young policeman at a major intersection in Margate because of his reckless driving, for which he subsequently sadly and dearly paid with his own life.
