DEAR Editor,-
The Southern Africa Territory of The Salvation Army encompasses four countries, South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland and the island of St Helena.
Its officers, soldiers and full-time employees provide spiritual and community services through approximately 230 corps (churches), societies and outposts, as well as through schools, hospitals, institutions for children, street children, the elderly, men and abused women, day care, goodwill, rehabilitation and social centres.
With the first big cold front of the year hitting South Africa recently, The Salvation Army has been gearing up its efforts to assist the homeless and those least able to cope with the bitter winter chill.
Winter is always a difficult time for the homeless. But this year, the economy pinch is making life tough for even more people, especially the unemployed and the poor. The Salvation Army assists people by providing shelter, food, clothing and blankets to help them through the cold winter months.
Although they are well set up to help people, they are always in need of resources to do so and therefore appeal to the public to open their hearts and wallets to help The Salvation Army to help others.
Giving help can be as simple as sending an sms message to 42290 with the key word ‘Winterhelp’. The cost of the sms is R30, the vast majority of which goes towards assisting the needy.
Alternatively, members of the public can make direct contributions at:
First National Bank
Branch code 251 905 (Braamfontein)
Account name Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal
Account number 50540087604
Use ‘Winterhelp’ and your name as a reference.
Businesses and companies wishing to contribute are asked to contact Major Carin Holmes at 011 7186745 or 082 9944351.
