‘Beach crime needs urgent policing’

Ramsgate residents did it themselves, but why should they? Is this not a job for the police?

DEAR Editor,-

When are the ‘powers that be’ going to clear out the people living on the reserve along our sea front? I see in the Herald (June 12) that Ramsgate residents did it themselves, but why should they? Is that not a job for the police and other service providers and which we pay taxes for?

Over the past year in the complex that I live in, we have had houses and cars broken into, an elderly woman was assaulted when she opened her door at dawn, and so I could go on and on. It has got to a stage where the police are not called in because it seems a waste of time.

The tracks all lead to the reserve, but show this to the police and yes, they know that is where they are, and that’s it. I was told by a police captain that a big sweep was to be done by the police and law enforcement, but what he forgot to tell me was in what year. I live 100m from the beach, but don’t go there anymore because it’s not safe.

It is time the police got out of their cars and walked the beat again; as has been proven in New York and in the UK, a policeman on the beat is far better than one driving around in a truck.
