OPINION: ‘Sheppie lacks functional public toilets’

Children watch adults relieve themselves in public, which is indecent and the catalyst of moral decay.

DEAR Editor,-

I am a resident of Port Shepstone and am deeply concerned that there are no functional public toilets available in the town.

Port Shepstone attracts thousands of people every day for shopping, work, transport, to name a few, and yet there no toilets! Men and women at the taxi rank relieve themselves in the nearby bushes along the streets in broad daylight! Men urinate in full view of women and children and as a result, the streets are filled with the unbearable smell of urine.

Section 10 of the constitution (1996) enshrines the right to human dignity. This right is at stake in Port Shepstone because of the unavailability of public toilets where people can relieve themselves in privacy.

So, on behalf of the public, an urgent response would be appreciated detailing how and why the Ugu Municipality has let all its people down to this extent. An estimated time-frame, if possible, to remedy the situation would also be welcomed.
