OPINION: ‘Speed limits are there for a reason’

The X-ray showed that our cat had a broken back and Dr Weiss told us that he must have been hit by a car.

DEAR Editor,-

My husband and I are pleading with all Munster residents, visitors and especially drivers of big lorries and trucks to adhere to the 40km speed limit in our little town.

Last year a duiker was hit by a car on Munster Road and recently a quad bike speeding up Early Street and racing without stopping into McCleod Street almost collided with me. The only thing that prevented an accident was my slow driving. The driver of the quad bike was about 10 or 11 years old.

My beloved ginger cat went missing for more than a week and when he finally came crawling home, we took him to Dr Silvi Weiss at Margate Veterinary Hospital where the X-ray showed that he had a broken back. Dr Weiss told us that he must have been hit by a car.

Even Dr Bruce Meyers at St Helier Veterinarian Hospital and Specialist Centre in Durban could not save him and we had to have our beloved pet euthanised. Perhaps if people would drive at the prescribed 40km at all times and stay within the white lines around corners, our wild and domestic animals would actually stand a chance of not being run over.

I still cry for my cat. Please drive slowly and thank you to all who do adhere to the speed limit.
