DEAR Editor,-
With reference to the letter ‘Retired teachers have so much to offer says ex principal’ (SCH July 24). My husband and I are semi-retired teachers, he is an ex-principal, who has been teaching a group of 20 selected children from a rural school near Bizana since early February.
The two subjects involved are maths and English for grades 5 and 6 and we are funded by a foundation in Pretoria. He is so passionate about teaching that he has made himself available as a teacher and/or interim principal of the newly-built, incomplete Hibiscus Coast Primary in Margate, which was in the news earlier this year.
I agree with wholeheartedly with Sweady Chetty. The Department of Education (DOE) should consider making use of retired teachers who are able, willing and fit to teach. My husband recently received a promising and encouraging letter from the MEC’s personal assistant, who has directed the letter to the DOE in Port Shepstone. We are currently awaiting a response.
My husband has 37 years’ experience, has been a principal at Sportweni and South Coast Academy and holds three merits for teaching excellence.
