DEAR Editor,-
The irresponsible article entitled ‘Highway ‘Crays’ – to buy or not to buy’ in the September 11 edition refers.
There is no debate. There are no pros. Based on irrefutable scientific evidence of their slow breeding rates and general population decline through over-exploitation, EKZN Wildlife has correctly banned the sale of these unfortunate creatures.
Greedy, uncaring motorists feeding the demand are at least as guilty as the poachers and should similarly be prosecuted. For illegally stopping on the highway, too. If even a bad case of gastro is insufficient to cure the moronic motorist of his appetite for these undoubted long-drop crayfish, perhaps a stiff term in the slammer would do the trick.
What’s next, Herald? A manufactured ‘debate’ about the pros and cons of Ugu setting up a ‘goods market’ for thieves to more profitably sell their stolen loot? After all, it’s all they know and the only income they can earn.
Or, roadside stalls to trade in baby monkeys, mongooses and chameleons? They’re so cute, you know, make great Christmas pressies – and at least the sellers aren’t stealing anything … Yeah right!
