OPINION: ‘Barbaric family massacre condemned’

Such incidents remind us that women, children and the elderly are still not safe in this country.

DEAR Editor,-

The Democratic Alliance in KZN would like to extend condolences to the family at Msinsini village, just outside Port Shepstone, whose family members were massacred in the early hours of October 21. Eight family members were brutally hacked to death by people who allegedly accused them of witchcraft.

According to police reports, seven family members were asleep in one house and another in the adjacent hut when a group of men allegedly entered the yard and attacked them with sharp objects. They then proceeded to the hut where they murdered a 70-year-old man and set the hut alight. The victims were four women aged between 15 and 60 and three toddlers aged between one and three. One survivor was taken to hospital with severe head injuries.

As the country is gearing itself for 16 days against the abuse of women and children next month, such incidents remind us that women, children and the elderly are still not safe in this country. It is the DA’s vision that all children of this country are safe from harm and all citizens are able to walk and live freely whereever they live in South Africa. We believe in a future where it shouldn’t matter where you live, but wherever you go, you must feel safe and secure.

The DA condemns these barbaric acts and applauds the Hawks for their swift action in arresting the alleged perpetrators.
