Inspiration: Sanctuary, please give us sanctuary!

There is hope for you in difficult times.

IN a time before court rulings, judges and juries, a time when God’s wisdom ruled in the affairs of men, scripture records for us God’s instructions for judgment to His people, Israel.

When God instructed Moses to appoint six cities of refuge, it was, that if someone had killed their fellow man accidentally, they could flee to one of these cities for safety from the avenger of blood, as it was called in those days, so that he could stand before the congregation in judgment.

This refuge or immunity was not for those, who with evil intentions, committed pre-meditated murder. Numbers 35.

However, this practice was carried down, even through the medieval times but was amended by kings and rulers to fit their style of rulership and was called the ‘right to asylum’, political and religious, or church sanctuaries.

This immunity was given to anyone fleeing from their avenger. This practice was abolished several centuries later.

But even now, in our times, fear and uncertainty still stalk the lives of people all around the world and given that satan is the ruler of this world, evil is rampant.

But there is hope for those who are in Christ. While the world is becoming darker continuously, there is light in the dwelling of God’s people. He has become our refuge, our sanctuary.

Even the Psalmist, King David, who lived way ahead of this time, saw this truth and captured it in his Psalms. He lived in the time of the old covenant but had a new covenant mentality.

He saw God as a refuge for His people. This immunity, this privilege of protection, we the people of God, continue to enjoy today.

Yes, there will always be the threat of fear, chaos and destruction and things may become worse still, but for those who ‘have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you.’ Psalm 91.

In this psalm, God has made provision for protection from every threat known to man. Declare this psalm over your life and that of your families that you may dwell safely in the land that the Lord your God has given you.

PSALM 9: 6-10

O enemy, destructions are finished forever!

And you have destroyed cities:

Even their memory has perished.

But the Lord will endure forever:

He has prepared His throne for judgment.

He shall judge the world in righteousness,

And He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness.

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed.

A refuge in times of trouble.

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You:

For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
